One of our fave bridal designers, Monique Lhullier, recently launched a collection of engagement rings and wedding bands through jewelry e-retailer Blue Nile. The offerings are split into four collections: antiquity, modern, romantic, and traditional, making the styles easy to shop and pretty much ensuring there is something for every taste. We talked with the multi-talented designer (she also designs a shoe collection, bridesmaids dresses, tabletop, and fine paper) about her work for Blue Nile.
Martha Stewart Weddings: In three words describe your aesthetic.
Monique Lhuillier: Delicate, romantic, refined.
MSW: Where do you find inspiration for your collection?
ML: I'm inspired by the designs of my bridal gowns. Above all, I wanted my jewelry collection to possess the qualities that define my bridal aesthetic. It was important that the collection be made with premium quality Platinum—a metal meant to last a lifetime—and beautiful diamonds. Additionally, each piece is set with a teeny pink sapphire, my favorite accent color that's symbolic of a blushing bride.
MSW: You've been designing wedding gowns for a long time and more recently tabletop items as well. What made you want to tackle bridal jewelry too?
ML: Every bride wants to feel beautiful and special on her wedding day. Designing wedding dresses and accessories that evoke those feelings in a bride is so rewarding. It only made sense to start designing engagement rings and wedding bands, which are both an enduring symbol of love and commitment.
MSW: What designs are you working on right now?
ML: I'm excited to announce that there are two new solitaire engagement ring styles now available. I'm also working on a collection of fine jewelry including earrings, necklaces, and bracelets which will be available this fall. The collection is very fresh and feminine, incorporating unique detailing to match every type of bride.
MSW: What is the favorite piece you've ever created?
ML: It's hard to choose just one! My favorite style of engagement ring from my jewelry collection is a round-cut diamond, enveloped in a romantic setting. I adore its simplicity and elegance.
MSW: What is the one piece of advice you would give to our readers hoping to give or receive the perfect engagement ring or wedding band?
ML: Every woman is unique and special, so she's looking to receive a ring that reflects her uniqueness. My advice for the man is to spend time doing research on the diamond, and to enter the process with an idea of his bride-to-be's style. The engagement ring is a symbol of their lives together and is a piece that will last a lifetime.
