One of the most fortunate things I get to do in my job is meet with jewelry designers from around the world to see their new offerings in engagement rings, wedding bands, and day-of jewelry--and I love hearing from the source about what inspires them. In an effort to hopefully give you a glimpse into this rarefied world we will be chatting with jewelry designers about their inspirations, design ethos, favorite love stories and more. Hopefully you'll find one whose aesthetics meld seamlessly with your own! As this is the most expensive and special purchases you'll ever make as a couple, it seems only right that you should know about all the craftsmanship, hard work, and yes, love, that goes into the creation of each and every piece.
First off: Kirk Kara. We've long adored his romantic engagement ring and wedding bands designs, and his two-tone design in rose and white gold recently one the 2013 Jeweler's Choice Award.
Martha Stewart Weddings: In a sentence, describe your aesthetic.
Kirk Kara: My designs have exquisite, mesmerizing details that engage the imagination and invite curiosity and interest.
MSW: Where do you find inspiration for your collections?
KK: Our handcrafted rings are inspired by historical designs that have captivated generations of couples in love. Our original designs are influenced by the past but reimagined for today. Drawn from romantic patterns found in nature and architecture, every meticulous detail is brought to life through platinum, gold, gemstones, and diamonds.
MSW: Bridal jewelry is very romantic; do you have a favorite story from a bride and groom you’ve worked with?
KK: I have so many favorites it would be impossible to choose just one! This is absolutely my favorite part of what we do because I get to see a couple in their best moment, when they are filled with epic happiness and love. Being able to witness a bride and groom’s glowing faces in this moment of bliss is truly priceless.
MSW: What is the favorite pieces you’ve ever created?
KK: My daughter’s wedding ring, knowing it is a symbol of happiness and union for their journey and lifetime to come.
MSW: What is the one piece of advice you would give to our readers hoping to give or receive the perfect engagement ring or wedding band?
KK: Find a design that is captivating to her, now and forever. Pick something that suits both style and personality so that you will always look at your ring and smile.
