Easy Style Advice for Dressing the MOB and MOG
Posted by Carrie Goldberg
Finding the gown may have seemed an almost impossible feat at the time, but more often than not, the most difficult members of your entourage to dress are your mothers. We hear you—styles marked "Mother Of..." can seem too matronly while items on the eveningwear floor are not always age appropriate. We recently received a plea from an MOG to be that got us thinking about day-of options for the executive members of your entourage.
Q: I don’t want to look like a a country bumpkin for my son’s wedding! The wedding is on June 22nd and is outside, but formal. The bride is wearing a long white lace gown, the groom and groomsmen are wearing tuxedos and the mother of the bride is wearing a navy blue tea length dress. I am a heavy-set, pear-shaped woman and I am not very comfortable in dresses but will wear one. What should I wear?!
A: While shopping for the day-of may be daunting, the happy couple is going to want you feeling as comfortable and beautiful as possible as you pose in their photos. If dresses aren't your thing, why not opt for dress pants or formal suiting? A fantastic pair of trousers with a satin trimmed blazer or lighter blouse option will suit a formal affair (and your comfort level!) just as much as a cocktail dress. Looking to try a skirt? Pair an elegant blouse, like a white button down silk option a la Carolina Herrera - with an A-line skirt and fantastic statement accessories for a look that mimics Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren's recent successes on the red carpet. If bright colors or pastels do not make you feel as comfortable as a neutral tone, try a midnight blue or a slate grey as an alternative to black. If you feel like donning black is a must, opt for textural fabrics that make basic little black dresses a bit more special. For silhouettes to suit a fuller shape, opt for A-line skirts and silhouettes that cinch at your smallest part - your waist. If you have a bust, go for V-necklines and sleeves as high necks can tend to make you look broader than you actually are. Congratulations on your son's engagement and happy shopping!
