A while back, we checked out potential wedding spots in northern California, and I'm happy to say we've said yes to one of them: Rutherford Grove Winery. When it came to choosing just the right spot, we definitely had some requirements.
1. It had to be beautiful (duh!), and have a hidden quality to it.
2. It had to have a flat, even space for dinner, dancing, and romping. Why? Grandparent mobility and stable tables.
3. It had to feel "right."
Number three might strike you as odd. This sort of feeling usually comes from walking on your destined college campus for the first time or trying on your dream wedding gown, but for me, my instincts didn't kick in until I found the perfect reception space. I was in the powder room after we saw Rutherford, and I had a vision (okay, perhaps a touch dramatic) of me and Scott walking hand-in-hand across the gorgeous lawn. It was my magic moment. Done deal. It also helped that Scott loved the place, too. In fact, it was the only venue where he was, literally, nipping at the heels of the manager as we toured the grounds.
What are your venue must-haves? I'd love to know!
2 In the corner of the tasting room lies this sophisticated oasis. If you had a late fall wedding, it'd be wonderful to have after-dinner drinks of hot cocoa or cider, and light a roaring fire.
3 Scott and I fell in love with the property's pizza oven pavilion. I plan on writing our names on the chalkboard and stringing fabric banners from the rafters! I think the space also makes a pretty swanky bar area for cocktail hour.

What a gorgeous spot! I think I agree with you about #2 on your list the most. Stability is very important.
