I can braid, and after much practice (and many torn-out hairs), I can French braid. But I never thought I'd master the fishtail braid. It just looked too complicated and too different from the three-strand plait I'd come to know so well. But, today I stumbled upon a fishtail braid how-to video on The Beauty Department. Two attempts and 10 minutes later, I'd achieved my first-ever fishtail. Cue the choir. And actually, since the braid requires two strands (instead of three) it was a lot easier to master than the good ol' Frenchie. Check out the video for the simple steps. Once you've got it down pat, loosen up the braid with your fingers and roll it into a bun like my inspiration, the updo below that was created by the pros at Blow.
