"It's very rare to find a foundation that matches your skin color perfectly," says Tom Pecheux, creative makeup director for Estée Lauder. To create the right shade, he blends together drops of two creamy foundations -- a slightly lighter and slighter darker one -- on the back of his hand (it's a makeshift palette!).
In addition to helping you find the perfect color, you can use this technique to adjust a formula or finish. I've blended a too-thick foundation with a tinted moisturizer to thin it out and mixed a dewy base with one that's more matte to add luster.
My newest cocktail? Benefit's new "Hello Flawless!" Oxygen Wow Liquid Foundation for a bit of glow (it has the consistency of a tinted moisturizer) and Chanel's new Long-Wear Flawless Fluid Makeup for staying power. Let me know how it goes!
