I wonder - are brides doing DIY to save money, to make a unique wedding item or both?

I noticed that a few brides from my wedding registry service have decided to save money buy creating their own wedding invites.
We even had a couple who had given out patches of fabric to their guests to sign and the newly weds will later on make a quilt out from it.
This will then become their "guestbook".
