Etiquette: Decorating the Getaway Car

Posted by

When my parents married, my dad parked his car in a downtown Minneapolis parking lot and took a taxi to the church. After the reception, he carried his bride away in a cab as well. Thus, he thwarted his boisterous new brothers-in-law's plan to tie tin cans to his car's bumper.

That tradition has lost a lot of ground recently. For one thing, it’s not much fun to prank a rented limo -- nor is it allowed, to be honest, especially when the chauffeur is right there.

So it often falls to the couple themselves to decorate their own getaway vehicle. (Of course, if you adorn your own car, that might intimidate the groomsmen out of trashing it. Maybe.)

I confess, I get wistful whenever we show a couple's snazzily decorated car -- there’s a nostalgia that accompanies the toilet paper, shaving cream, and tin cans.

Are you going to decorate your car? Or will your groomsmen beat you to it?
