Officially, the answer is "No." Wedding favors are certainly not a requirement, even if they are incredibly common. (Of course, we sure do love them here at Martha Stewart Weddings!) You'd think that guests wouldn't care much either, especially since so many of them leave the favor behind.
However, when my mother-in-law was stressing over what favor to give at the reception for her wedding anniversary, she pooh-poohed my suggestion that she skip it altogether. "These people expect to get something," she said. And a simple bar of chocolate was not going to be enough; it needed to be worth more than $8 and less than $15, she insisted.
Do you feel obligated to provide a favor? Take our poll!
And tell us the details in the comments, as well as how much money you plan to spend per person.

I've never seen the point of favors, seems juvenile, like a party bag. I do, however, like a photo thank you card.

We are doing a donation in lieu of favors. I feel much better about spending the money on a worthy cause, since so many people don't care about the favors.

We are also making a charitable donation in lieu of favors. We chose a charity that has name recognition with our guests and that is also meaningful to us. I'd much rather spend the money helping others than giving (typically) another food item to my guests.
