I'm a big fan of Tiecrafters, the design-your-own-tie company. You can choose your own fabric, bring it to Tiecrafters (or mail it to them), and they will make the most perfect custom ties, bowties, and pocket squares for your event. This lets you add a personal touch to the menswear at your wedding! Above you can see how we where able to choose our own stylish fabrics and have Tiecrafters produce custom ties for our photo shoots.
Tiecrafters has been in business for 57 years, and Andy Tarshis has been its president for the last 25. After college at American University, Andy worked at Bloomingdales until making the change to running a small business. I'm always calling Andy with requests for photo shoots, so I thought I'd call him one more time, just for fun. Here's what he had to say.
Sherri: Are bow ties becoming more popular for weddings?
Andy: The most popular ties for weddings are still 4-inch hand ties (long ties), however, we make a fair amount of bows. The percentage might be 10% bows and 90% long ties.
S: Do you get a lot of requests for skinny ties?
A: We are getting more requests for "skinny" ties, as styles are changing to the narrower widths. The majority remain 3 3/4 inches, but that is clearly adjusting to a more narrow shape ranging from 2 to 3 1/4 inches.
S: Should a groom’s tie match his groomsmen's ties?
A: We do many weddings in which the groom and groomsmen's ties are the same, however, in most cases the groom's tie is a little different so that he stands out. In many cases, the groom's tie will match or be of the same material as the bride or bridesmaids' gowns.
S: What is the weirdest tie request you have ever gotten?
A: One customer asked us to make a tie from her
girlfriend's sheer nightgown. Another interesting customer had us make
neckwear from a snakeskin.
S: What kind of fabrics are best to use when creating ties for a destination wedding taking place on a beach?
A: At beach weddings, we most often use cottons, seersucker, and silks in pastel colors.
S: What is your favorite part of your job?
A: I love all the interaction with our varied customers. Our business allows me to meet some very interesting people from all over the world--our customers range from CEOs and celebrities to politicians and very happy people about to get married--and I love the chance to be creative for all of them.
What kinds of ties are you using in your wedding? What colors and fabrics?
