I've Got the Blues...and Pinks and Yellows

Diamonds are a girl's best friend, but don't count out other friendly stones. Lately, I've noticed that brides are choosing sapphires to accompany the diamonds in their engagement rings and wedding bands, a trend I happen to love. Sapphires have always been a favorite of the royals. They were worn on the wrist of the Duchess of Windsor on her wedding day because she felt they made her eyes sparkle. Years later, a lovely dark blue sapphire graced the wedding ring of Princess Diana, creating an absolute frenzy for sapphire wedding rings.

One thing that might surprise you is the varied and wonderful hues that can be found in sapphires, seen below. Different elements in the stone can create colors like pink, yellow, green and orange; this is actually true of any stone, even diamonds.

In celebration of the sapphire's return to glory, I wanted to share with you a new collection from Royal Asscher of America. The pieces are truly beautiful and will be available in stores in the coming weeks. What a lovely way to add to your something blue!

Does your engagement ring feature a stone other than a diamond? What made you choose a colored stone? Or if you haven't chosen a ring yet, would you consider a colored stone?

  • I love this idea... I've always been a fan of colored stones and this is a great idea to branch away from the same old same old! Thanks for the trend update!

  • I didn't want to go with something traditional. My ring is a cigar band ring (FI smokes them so it is kinda cute.) 5 1ct Rhodolite Garnets and a row of diamonds on either side. Its just more me than a dainty diamond.

  • My e-ring is a 1 ct. radiant cushion cut purple sapphire in a smooth, yellow gold 1/2 bezel setting. It's -so- me! No prongs to get caught on things and it's purple! It's really fun to watch the stone change from electric purple in natural light to more of a merlot color indoors.

  • I love, love, love, engagement rings with color. I think they add something unique to every design. If you're looking for unique rings, try weddzilla.com, you can post specifically what kind of ring you're looking for and jewelers can let you know if they have it.

  • I have a channel set ring with a series of small stones as my engagement ring - six sapphires alternating with 5 diamonds. sapphires are also his birthstone. no prongs, nothing sticking out from my finger to catch on gloves or sweaters, and nothing i'm constantly trying to center on my finger :)

  • Yes! This is the type of ring I'm currently shopping for & have wanted ever since I've actually started thinking about an engagement ring. Neither my boyfriend or I are too into the diamond as a center stone & I love yellow sapphires.
I'm on the hunt for a very pale yellow sapphire (pref. cushion cut), in a vintage/art deco palladium setting with pave diamond accents. I've found a few beautiful settings at Fay Cullen & Topazery, but in white gold or platinum. I just really like the idea of palladium for it's vintage appeal, how light weight it is & it's hardness (it's in the platinum family) & sapphires are a 9 on the hardness scale. I'm kind of hard on my hands - I'm a seamstress part time.

  • You right diamond is a girl best friends, liked me i collect diamond i don't care its either expensive or not,all my care is i get what i want. Thanks for your entry i think it could be a nice collection as well.
