Perfumes with Personality

Posted by Martha Stewart Weddings

One of our summer interns, Alice Hines, is a perfume aficionado and sent over this great post. Couldn't resist sharing some of her olfactory ideas with you.

One of the most important things in planning your wedding is
giving it your own special touch—whether it be hand-made invitations, vintage
gowns
, or traditional monograms. Something that could add personality to your wedding  is a bespoke (custom made) perfume….even though
you’ve probably already found the perfume love-of-your-life, a special
fragrance could make the day even more unique. It could also be fun to match
your fragrance to your wedding! Musk for a mountain wedding...jasmine and gardenia for a spring wedding...Scents also evoke
deeper memories than any other senses, so every time you smell your perfume you can remember the special day!

Not only do they create custom scents, but also do
bridesmaids gifts, favors and in-store spa parties. Very cute idea for a bridal shower....

Le Labo

A very hip fragrance store with locations in New York, L.A., and Tokyo. Though their scents aren't made to order, they're uniquely formulated by French perfumers--a great alternative to ubiquitous department store perfumes.  In any of their stores, they'll fill the bottles to-order and customize labels for you!

They also make custom candles...this could be a really creative idea for table settings!

How cute is this last picture? If you look closely the girls are all holding perfume bottles.

What do you think about custom fragrances as a gift? Obviously we all want custom fragrances that we pick ourselves with the help of expert perfumers, but how much do you trust someone else's (even your best friend's) olfactory taste?

  • I think a custom fragrance is most definitely something that you have to pick out yourself. I know I am very picky when it comes to scents, and what a waste it would be for someone to go to all the trouble of designing you a custom perfume and then to not like it! Plus, scents smell different depending on who is wearing them. For example, I bought my boyfriend cologne for Christmas, and I loved the way it smelled in the department store. Then, when I gave it to him and he tried it on, I couldn't handle resting my head on his shoulder because of the smell and it made his neck all irritated! A gift card or group trip would definitely be the way to go here.

  • I would love to know where I can get that beautiful hummingbird perfume bottle. It's so lovely!

  • You can get the hummingbird perfume bottle at Salud or online (www.saludspabar.com). I really like the Salud House Blend scent.

  • I just had a custom perfume made with all natural ingredients, all the oils came from flowers and plants, no synthetics, and it is the most beautiful perfume ever! There are a lot of perfumers at http://naturalperfumers.com who offer this service.

  • well i like hugo boss , it goes with every thing u wear .

  • Today's market is flooded with hundreds and hundreds of different fragrances ranging from floral to woodsy. Most women love the smell of perfume, wearing it even when going to the grocery store. The problem is that perfume allergy for some women, is anything but nice.
