Holiday Cheer

Posted by

Everywhere I turn I'm surrounded by newly engaged couples, probably because the holidays always seem like the perfect time to pop the question and celebrate the happy news with friends and family. If you're beginning to plan for what will likely be the biggest party you'll ever throw, one great way to get started is to look into bridal events in your area. If you happen to be in New York City on January 26, look no further than the Wedding Party, a super-informative, one-stop-shopping event we at Martha Stewart Weddings are hosting with our friends at the Wedding Library. You'll meet the city's top wedding vendors—everyone from event designer Preston Bailey to gown designer Reem Acra, plus photographers, cake designers, and florists—all under one roof. And if you can't join us, by all means tune in to The Martha Show on January 18th, where designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka of Badgley-Mischka fame will unveil their newest wedding styles. Plus, we'll be revealing all our best tips from the latest issue of our magazine. Speaking of sharing, if you have a great story about how you were proposed to, I'd love to hear it!

  • I have a cute little engagement story :)
This past June while I was in Bermuda with my family, my boyfriend bought me an engagement ring and the same day told me via-telephone that he didn't think he ever wanted to get married. Naturally, I was pretty upset....so we fought about it a lot for a few weeks. Then we went to Hilton Head, SC and had a wonderful adventure jet-skiing with dolphins. We had a beautiful romantic dinner at the Olde Fort Pub, which is an amazing waterfront restaurant, and he INSISTED on rushing to see the lighthouse (which I had been most excited about). I grew up at the beach and have always been in love with the romance and hope that lighthouses have.
Once we got to the top...he managed to shuffle me around to the perfect spot, and spun me around from the gorgeous view to show me a lovely little robin's egg blue box and ask me to marry him!
I was SHOCKED...based on the conversation we had a few weeks prior...which he had only started so I would be completely surprised.
    Of course, I said yes.
Our wedding is on March 8 in the village chapel on Bald Head Island, NC (next to the Old Baldy lighthouse, of course!), and is based on the pink and poppy story from one of your summer issues. I only hope we can come CLOSE to the elegance and fun of all of the weddings and ideas you create! My dream is to have an effortless looking chic and fun Martha-wedding :)

  • Here's our holiday engagement story!
As a Christmas gift last year, Nick took me for a spa getaway in the small town of Snoqualmie in the Cascade Mountains. We arrived at the beautiful Salish Lodge and Spa, which overlooked spectacular waterfalls. We enjoyed heated stone massages, followed by a romantic fireside dinner at the lodge. After dinner, the waiter suggested a walk into the park to view the lit waterfall at night. As soon as we stepped outside, it started pouring rain, and we ran gleefully to the observation deck for shelter. Once there, we realized that we were completely soaked, and started laughing hysterically. The waterfall was gorgeous, and it was an absolutely perfect setting for a proposal. Nick got down on one knee, took my hand, and popped the question. And, of course, I said yes!
Our wedding is planned for Fort Belvoir, VA in July 2008.

  • Hi Darcy!
Here's my wedding story for you! My fiance and I have had a great love for wine and are members of the Swanson Winery in Napa Valley. We went up this August for a Bon Vivant Dinner at Clarke and Elizabeth Swanson's house in Oakville, CA. The party was outside in their back yard surrounded by the vines with a beautiful setting sun! Conrad stood up after dinner, played our favorite song, "Feeling Good" by Micheal Buble (on his cell phone that he had downloaded!) and proposed! Clarke Swanson toasted us with Champagne and we celebrated with everyone, lots of delicious wine and danced the night away under the stars!
We will be getting married on October 4, 2008 in the Berkshires (where I am from) at the Lenox Club, Lenox, MA. Our colors are black and white (a flocked, damask pattern) with splashes of red. It will be whimsical but with a New England elegance!

  • I'm so glad I found your blog through Something Old, Something New and Wedding Wire. My brides will really love your blog so I'm adding it to my blogroll! Thank you!!

  • What a fantastic blog! I'm a wedding photographer near SF, and am just hoping that soon you will bring a "Wedding Party" kind of touch to the West Coast - I can tell it will be like nothing else available!

  • I just found a company that does beautiful, classically styled invitations in a slightly modern style. They're online at paperdollsdesign.com. Just wanted to share!

  • Hi Darcy,
My wonderful boyfriend took me to paris as a suprise four years ago for my 21st birthday. Last December for my 25th birthday and to celebrate my graduation from university he told me he was takng me to london. When we got to the airport I found out we were actually going to paris. (Lots of tears and shrieking) On the night of my birthday we went for a dinner cruise down the seine, (another suprise) as we went past the eiffel tower - he proposed. We are getting married at christmas this year - I cant wait. He could have proposed to me at the chip shop and I would have said yes. Good luck to everyone getting married this year all the best for the future.

  • Hi Darcy,
Here's my proposal story for you. I work at an after school program for at risk youth it had been our christmas dinner with all the children that evening so when I got home I was pretty exausted my boyfried Mike asked me to go for a walk even though it was -21 degrees celsious. After some hesitation I agreed to go once outside he blindfolded me and took me to the back yard. He took off the blindfold got on one knee and in very large letters spray painted on the snow was Will You Marry Me surrounded by candels it was very romantic. We are getting married February 14 (Valentines Day) 2009. In Sudbury Ontario Canada. We are having a winter wonderland themed wedding full of ice blue shimmering snowflakes and glisening silver. Love your blog and all your advice thanks.

  • I'm very happy to share my proposal story! My new husband-to-be is a pilot, currently in training with the U.S. Air Force. The evening of January 1, we drove out to a local rural airport. Walks at the airport are a favorite date for us. Unfortunately the proposal didn't go quite as planned - both the Georgia State Patrol and a city police officer interrupted our walk! They were just doing their jobs, making sure we weren't up to no good!
After speaking with the law enforcement, my boyfriend then walked me out onto the taxiway. It was cold, but the air was clear and the stars were twinkling. He asked me what my resolutions for 2008 are, and I told him. I asked was his are, and he said "to make this year even better than the last." I asked how he was going to do that and he dropped to his knee and said, "By asking you to be my wife. Will you be my wife?" I forgot to say "yes" in all of the excitement of the moment. But, through my hugs and kisses, he figured out my answer. I could not have asked for a more beautiful proposal

  • My engagement story is kind of funny, actually.
My boyfriend and I were at his parents house, lounging around the living room one Saturday afternoon in April. We had both fallen asleep for a little while on the floor, and about 20 minutes into my nap, I woke up and realized that Josh was not lying next to me. Thinking he had gone to the bathroom, I closed my eyes again for about 30 seconds until he returned. He was standing behind an armchair, and while this seemed a little odd, I didn't give it much thought. Half-asleep,he asked me to get up. After several protests, I got up and he said this:
"Megan, a week after we started dating I knew you were very special. A couple of weeks later, I knew I loved you. And in less than a month, I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you..."
At this point, a single tear came down his cheek--and all I could think was "Something really serious is going on!!! What's wrong?!?!"
He continued, while lowering to his knee, "Will you marry me?"
I'm not even sure I said yes until after we hugged and kissed, but I didn't cry until he told me that he had the ring for 3 weeks before that!
We are getting married September 26th, 2009!!!

  • I need some etiquette advice for an engagement announcement in the local paper. This is a 2nd marriage for me, and I never changed my name back to my maiden name. So, in the announcement and the new wedding invites, do I announce myself with my maiden name, my married name (from 1st marriage, that is legal my name and what I currently go by) or what?? Want to do this right, and I know Martha would have the answer! Please help! Meghan

  • Not your typical engagement story...
My fiance is a pilot and mechanic and had been going to the Reno Air Races for 19 years as of last September. He was on the crew of one of the race planes for five years - the Rare Bear. The plane had done poorly the year before but made a major come back in 2007 and after winning the race at the end of a rough week, we all headed up to the winners circle to join other mechanics, fans, press and the pilot. The sun was setting which cast a lovely high-desert glow over everyone, emotions were high and we were surrounded by all our friends. I dropped to my knee right there on the ramp in front of God, the airplane and everybody and asked him to marry me. He said, "NO, no - I don't have a ring, YOU don't have a ring!" But I did, and I slipped it on his hand and as we both started crying he asked, "So this is it?" I said "This is it," and he said yes and it couldn't have been more perfect!
We agreed later it might have been corny if he had asked me to marry him at the air races - his favorite sporting event - but I just couldn't imagine a better place and time. He loved this plane, loved these people, a gorgeous sunset... Not planned, I just had a ring because I wanted to give him one when we did get engaged, regardless of who did the asking.

  • My now husband proposed to me last July, he spent some time arranging it and truly suprised me! We play a TON of softball and one of the teams that we organize he let in on the secret and got some help from them. On a normal Sunday, we had a game that evening, I got geared up and we headed to the field. At some point he let the other team in on the secret too and at the end of the third inning as I was coming in from catching he and his daughter headed out from the dugout and met me at third base where he dropped to a knee and proposed to me in front of both teams and my family and some of our really good friends. His daughter was holding a big sign that my friend made that said "will you marry us" it was wonderful. Creative and wonderful.
Hope you hear lots of great stories!

  • I got engaged in September 2007 and I am soon to be married on Oct. 25th 2008. My engagement story starts with our first date. Dave took me to this wonderful tapas bistro called San Chez on our first date. I had the most amazing time and I had a hard time that night not telling him that I was completly in love with him. A year and a half later on a wednesday (no day special) he said he wanted to go to San Chez for dinner. When we got to San chez he had reserved the same table we had sat at on our first date. When we sit down...he pulls out the receipt from our first date! He said he wanted to make the day special and order the same tapas we had from our first date. (this was so cute!) After we ordered the meal to my surprise he asked me to marry him!! I said yes and I am in the process of planning the wedding myself to save some $$$. Thanks for letting me share my story.

  • Dear Ms. Miller,
Not every day that two pilots decide to fly together forever....
Last July Brian and I went with friends to their cabin in Ontario. To say it was secluded--the only way to get there was by boat or seaplane. Although I am a First Officer for a large airline, I have never gotten my seaplane rating. The weather was not cooperating but Brian was determined to get me flying their Piper Super Cub float plane.
After several days of delays we were finally able to fly and the view was beautiful beyond my imagination. When we coasted in to land on the pristine water, Brian cut the engine and asked me how the landing was. I said it was perfect, nothing could have made it any better. He asked, "not even this?" and asked me to marry him. In a tiny plane in Georgian Bay, I said yes and have never been happier. With all the crying, I was lucky not to drop the ring in the Bay!

  • Darcy,
Eric and I were taking Swing Lessons where I work (50 minutes from where we live) and we decided to stay the night at a Bed and Breakfast after the class. The next morning we traveled into the wine country of Ste. Genevieve, MO where Eric had taken me on our first date. Later that day, we stopped at the Trail of Tears Park where Eric and I had posed for our first picture together overlooking the Mississippi River several years earlier. We then traveled to another location we he proposed that also overlooks the Mississippi River. I was completely suprised! I cried for a good ten minutes. Now, I also knew that we were taking a lot of detours because after he proposed, we had to stop and wash the car before we got home. This was also before we stopped at a county fair and after Eric suggested that we pull over and take a nap. OK, now. I wanted to get home to see our new puppy, Clyde so I was extremely ready to come home.
When we were driving down our street, Eric commented to me, "I hope you're ready for this"! I asked him, "Ready for what"? Then...I saw balloons on our mail box and Eric begins to drive through our yard (not up the driveway) to the garage where almost a hundred guests wait outside screaming suprise!! I instantly saw my dad and, of course, cry. I saw all of our friends and family that drove up to celebrate our engagement together that Eric had been planning for 3 months.
We are getting married on November 15! Our colors for the wedding will be navy blue, white and orange. I'm so excited and can't wait to marry my wonderful blue eyed man!

  • Hi Darcy,
It was a beautiful summer night in New York City last July. Jon took me to wonderful dinner at the Sea Grill in Rockefeller Center. He ordered caviar and a great bottle of champagne. The waitress asked if we were celebrating a special occasion, and he said, "no, just that I love her", as he was looking at me and holding my hand. So sweet he his!!! We just enjoyed our time together and the wonderful dinner. Once finished, we walked out of the restaurant towards the steps of the rink. As we began to walk up the steps, he stopped and turned around to face me. He told me how much in love with me he was, how he wanted to spend his life with me, how much I meant to him, then slipped the ring on my finger proposing. I was ecstatic, and of course said yes. It was such a beautiful night. We then walked over to Morrell's wine bar to celebrate over champagne and cheesecake, while sending pictures of my ring from our phones to our family to tell them the news. He's a wonderful wonderful man, and I couldn't be anymore happier. We now have begun to plan our wedding, now that I've finally found a beautiful badgley mischka gown. It's in July of 2009, in Newport, RI at Castle Hill Inn. It's outdoors, and I want a french garden theme, and have no clue on where to begin with decor. It's been wonderful to share my story and to read others. Thanks Darcy!

  • Hi Darcy,
This past May my parents, my boyfriend and I went to Germany to visit relatives. It was my boyfriends first time out of the country and he was quite excited about experiencing my family's culture so he had been studying German for months just to be able to speak to my relatives that didnt speak any english. Anyways, we visited many touristy spots throughout our trip including the ever popular Neuschwanstein Castle(Cinderella's Castle in Disney World was modeled after it). That particular day my boyfriend decided to wear a sport jacket with his jeans and I couldnt figure out why..and every picture we took together he had me stand on his left side..which was odd...anyways...we went on the tour of the castle and when we got to the Throne Room of the Castle when the tour guide asked if anyone had any questions he said that he did...he got down on one knee in front of 60+ strangers and asked me to marry him. It was the most romantic day/time of my life. I started crying and of course said yes..and everyone started clapping and cheering. It was amazing.
What I found out was the reason he didnt want me to stand on his right side for the pictures was he had the ring box in that pocket and he thought I would feel it.
Our wedding is July 23, 2008 in the Bahamas with an at home Reception in MA where we live.

  • Hi Darcy,
I received the sweetest birthday gift a girl could ever ask for, a proposal during the re-creation of our first date. On our 1st date 5 years ago we met on the plaza of Lincoln Center near their Christmas tree, then walked from there to Rockefeller Center to see their tree and the store windows along 5th Avenue. When Ray asked what I wanted to do for my birthday last December, I suggested we go all of the places we'd gone on our 1st date. When we arrived at Lincoln Center, the place where all of this started, I was looking at the tree, not paying attention to him, and the next thing I knew he had a ring box open asking me to marry him. What a happy surprise, and of course I accepted. We are planning a vineyard wedding for this summer or fall on the north fork of Long Island, another of our favorite places to visit.

  • Hey...Darcy,
    "A very romantic proposal story"
Me and my husband-to-be, has been dating now for almost a year. I met him, during a new chapter in my life, which was my divorce from my ex- husband, and my romantic and loving fiance really helped me get through it all.
We have both been through a bad marriage, and divorce, so we both knew what we wanted in a relationship, and what we didn't want in a relationship.
You might not believe this, but I believe that God can allow someone to cross your path for a reason, and that special person in my life is my fiance.Well, it's February, and I got engaged last night. My husband-to-be told me last week that he was planning to take me and him to Folly beach, South carolina...so we could get away for a 3-day weekend. He came over on his lunch break, the day we left, to give me my decoy of a valentine present.
I didn't know that my old fashioned parents, my sister, and my fiance's mom knew about what he was planning...and to me it seemed like they were just acting weird about the whole thing. Because my old-fashioned parents would never approve of me going on a 3 day weekend alone, with my boyfriend, lol.
About a hour after we got here to our hotel room, he asked me if he could take a stroll with me on the beach. And since our hotel room overlooked the ocean,I didn't mind.
After awhile of talking, he asked me if I wanted my present, and of course I said, yes, give it to me. Because up to now, he made me believe that I had two gifts, but played off like i didn't.He handed me a box, that from what I gathered from looking at it, was a bracelet box. I asked him what it was, and he just said to open it. I opened it and found a smaller box, inside. And since I couldn't really tell what it was, since it was nighttime, I took it and opened it up. That was when he knelt down on the sand, and asked me to marry him!!
I know in my heart, that I will never forget this weekend, ever.
Because all of my life, I heard of romantic love proposal stories, and now, I have one to tell of my own.

  • I got engaged on my birthday March 15th, 2007. My boyfriend wanted to go ice fishing so bad and I couldn't figure out why. Yes, I love fishing its my favorite thing to do but jeez it was my birthday and it was extremely cold out. So, we finally got out to the lake set up the ice fishing house and started fishing. I will admit I was kind of cranky that day and I even said (this was sooo rude and i apologized after)"I can't believe I'm turning 23 years old and I still don't have a ring!" I wish I could take back that statement. Okay, continuing-he caught one northern than he was busy with his line. The next thing I knew he was like, "Melinda, my bobber went under. Do you want to catch the fish?" Well, of course its my turn to catch a fish. HaHa
So, there I am pulling up on the line and I was like there is no fish on! He's like keep pulling it up. And I did and i put the hook on the floor. I didn't even see the ring! He's like, "Melinda Look!" I was so surprised. He than got on one knee and proposed. I think I said, "Are you serious" like 200 times. This was the perfect proposal for me. Fishing is a passion of mine and he totally fooled me. And nobody can believe he put my ring down in a lake full of northerns. Brave soul he is.

  • We've had the most over-the-top, romantic courtship, but the proposal was more of a "discussion." It was New Year's Eve day in my car as we were parked in my garage. We had been discussing marriage a lot over the weekend, but there was no date yet--it was just a distant future prospect for us. Finally, I said, "So when were you thinking we'd get married?"
He replied, "Well, I thought we'd get married in April and I was planning on proposing to you on Valentine's Day."
"Are you on crack?" I asked him jokingly. I explained that I could never pull off a wedding in two months. That I had to book the temple, the reception venue, and friends and family had to plan their travels here.
So we agreed that we would go ahead and book everything and do the April wedding. (And four months is still a very short time!)
He DID propose on Valentine's Day and we then got my lovely ring. But I'll always remember our discussion in my garage as we planned our lives together. It was a strangely touching moment for both of us.
I find that many people when they hear our "proposal" story seem to have expected something more "over the top" because the whole courtship has been that way, but I've learned a very important lesson throughout all my own wedding planning (albeit my short wedding planning) and that is I can't fulfill everyone's dreams and fantasies out there. I have my own unique dreams and fantasies and in a blue moon they might line up with what most people expect or want for me, but mostly my dreams are very different--they're my own. And my garage proposal is the one I cherish the most.

  • Just wanted to share our fun story.
Drew and I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and have dated for 17 years...yes, 17 years! But, I'll have to answer the inevitable question "what took so long" in another message.
We are members of a local Mardi Gras Krewe along with many of our friends. Each year the Krewe hosts a formal Mardi Gras Ball to honor the King and Queen. During the ball each individual float's Krewe makes a toast to the King and Queen. Drew was chosen by our float's Krewe to give the toast this year. He did an excellent job in front of the crowd as he toasted our royalty. But after the toast he did not relinquish the microphone but instead proceeded into a marriage proposal, which included a beautiful ring. After 17 years, I was completely caught by surprise. None of us had any idea what he had planned - except for my parents, who he had consulted the prior day (and the King and Queen whose permission he had asked since this was their special night too). It was truly a memorable night with many of our dearest friends and family there to share the joyous occasion!
But I must go on to share another fun part of this story. The next day my sister, Kelly, presented me with an engagement gift. She had acually purchased the gift nearly 15 years ago in anticipation of our engagement. As she and her husband tell the story, Kelly carried this gift along on many occasions when she thought there might be reason for a special proposal. For years, she brought the beautifully wrapped gift to family gatherings, birthdays, holidays - any time she saw an opportunity for Drew to pop-the-question! Now finally, "the gift" could be given. Through laughter and tears of joy, I opened the slightly dog-eared package to happily discover The Wedding Planner by Martha Stewart. Although the book was copywritten in 1988 and the enclosed calander only covered as far as 1996, I know it is a timeless classic that will provide invaluable information, expertise and helpful advice for any decade! This copy of Martha's planner will definetly be put to good use after all these years!

  • Hi Darcy,
My fiance is in the military and currently serving in Kosovo. Last summer, since I'm a teacher and was out on break, he sent me round-trip flight tickets to Athens, Greece and met me there during his two week break. We toured across the country to the island of Corfu, where we stayed on the west side of the island in Paleokastritsa. On August 4, 2007 we rented a boat and went exploring the beautiful coastline. We found a small beach that no one else had claimed, anchored, and waded to shore. Since he was taking online classes, he pretended to study so I began to read a Greek cook book while we sat on the sand overlooking the Ionian Sea. Suddenly a little wooden box appeared on the page. Looking at my fiance, I opened it and saw a pretty solitaire diamond ring! He said, "Wanna get married?" I just laughed out loud and said, "Yeah!" I was genuinely surprised...I felt so spoiled! He had purchased the ring in Kosovo and had had a hard time finding a genuine diamond. He and two other soldiers had traveled to several jewelers before one finally referred him to the one in Pristina. It means so much to me that he planned all that for me-- and admitted to being nervous about the proposal, as if I could say anything except "Yes!"

  • Matt was an actor at Tweetsie Railroad , a “wild west” them park in the mountains of N.C. He created a show (secretly) to propose to Melissa. She was tricked into coming in the park for the day, only to be “kidnapped” by Indians. After over 200 of their friends, family and public park-goers hopped on the steam train. Matt had a friend tape the whole thing from the train! You’ll just have to watch this clip to find out what happens!

  • Here's another engagement story for you:
My boyfriend and 8 other friends went on a 7 day vacation to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. We've been together for 3 years and I was hoping we would get engaged on this trip. Needless to say, 5 fun-filled days went by and we were all having a blast. By the 6th day I was kind of disappointed it hadn't happened, so of course I assumed he was going to wait.
On night 6, we went to dinner and afterwards he wanted to take a walk down by the ocean. It was dark, the stars were out and the sound of the ocean was awesome. He started talking about how we've been together for 3 years and he suddenly got down on one knee and asked me!! Of course I said yes!
He then told me about how he had met with my father right before we left on our trip to ask him for my hand in marriage - I absolutey melted and I think I fell more in love with him!
June 2009 is the prospective date and I can't wait to marry my best friend!

  • here a mini story: my fiance told me to meet him & his friend at the chrystler building after work. i waited abt 40 (i ran into a duane read, it was super cold) minutes for him, we had been texting in the mean time. finally we meet and he tells me that his friend cancelled so we should just go home, though he needed to use the restroom at grand central station. we chatted on the way and i then also needed to use the restroom. i noticed he was a bit nervous or just super cold/shivering. we keep walking to the main con-course and i see flashing lights, he starts crying & getting down on his knee & then i look up at the balcony-my close friends where there to watch him propose to me. it was such an intense and sweet moment in my life. he made it so special and so simple...:-D

  • Hi,
I have been with my boyfriend for 10 years before he propose to me. We have been talking about getting married or never get marry just stay as we are. He is great guy because he sure to make sure that I have communicate access which is sign language. I have been born deaf, but can talk and read lips. He already learns sign language while we were dating. He was a friend of my in high school and I was teaching his ex-girlfriend sign language and she will teach him. When he graduates he went to college while I was still in high school and I have not seen him for 2 years later. When we got together 2 years later and started dating and he already knew sign language by taking my dad's class whom happen to be deaf too.
One day my good friend and I planned to go Napa for girl’s weekend because she going to be a mom so she wanted to get out before the baby born. We both love spa. We both planned the trips together, but I got to her house late because I had to work the night before. When we arrive to Napa we got into the hotel which the flowers, candle and white balloon was everywhere with one bed and I told her that I order 2 bed and than I told her I think we were in wrong room. She said maybe and my fiancé' came out of the bathroom and I didn’t know who it was and I step back and ready to do karate which I don’t know (ha).
I was so shock and shacking that I said "what you doing here" it blew me off because I wanted girls weekend out and I saw him dress suit and I was in sweat pants and t shirt. It hit me and said "you got to be kidding Me." he got down his knee and asked me to marry him and I said yes of course. We have wedding this coming July 2008.
We will have 2 sign language interpreters for my family and friends. I will tell every guest to wag their napkins if they want to see us kiss because hearing people will tap their glass and I won't be able to hear it so we decided to have them wag their napkins so I can see it.
I wish you all the best who planning the wedding!!!!!

  • Hi ~
First of all, I wanted to tell you that my fiance Sarah absolutely loves your site (as do I secretly). I am contacting you today though, for a different reason. My name is Mike and I am the author of http://www.thegroomstruth.com ~ It is the unbiased and (hopefully) comical blog / site dedicated to to the guys perspective of weddings. It has been featured on brklybride, junebugweddings.com, and theflirtyguide.com so far. I figured you folks may need a break from your hectic day and might want to take a look. If not, no worries and thanks again for keeping Sarah so excited during the day. Who knows, maybe you want to feature a funny uplifting story regarding grooms? Just an idea :-)

  • My fiance is a police officer in the city where we live and while his job doesn't get in the way of our personal life very often, every once in a while it does. He was off work on the day of our one year anniversary, so I took the day off work as well. We spent the day just hanging out and decided to go to dinner that evening. As we were walking out the door to dinner, his phone rang. It was his supervisor letting him know there was a situation and he needed to be at work within the next 15 minutes. I was a little upset that our plans were halted, but there wasn't much I could do. About an hour later there was a knock on the door. His best friend, who is also a police officer, was standing there. I knew this was not good. He told me my fiance had been in a minor accident and was at the hospital. He said we needed to go to his car to get some personal belongings and then go to the hospital. As we were driving, I kept telling myself I needed to just stay clam til I had a better idea what was going on. The next thing I knew, we were getting close to the spot where we had first met--the mailboxes at the apartments where we used to live. As we pulled further down the street I could see his police car and jumped out to get his stuff from his car as soon as I could. As I did, I saw my fiance step out of his car. He took my hands and led me to the spot in front of the mailboxes where we'd talked for 2 hours the first time we me. He wrote me a "ticket" for taking personal goods (his heart) and made me sign the ticket, as this was a must appear offence. After I'd signed, he got down on one knee, asked me to marry him and put the ring on my finger. Of course I said yes. We will be married this August, two years to the day after we first met.

  • In May of 2007, I was visiting my parents in England. It was Ann Marie’s (my sister) and my last time to visit as “non-tourists,” so we were soaking in everything British. I had wanted Forrest (boyfriend at the time) to come as well so he could see where I grew up and went to school, but he had to work (so he said). May 17th started out like any normal day in Egham (the small town where my parents live). I took the dogs out first thing in the morning and sat down to have breakfast with the family. Just like any other day, we went to the Windsor Great Park to walk the dogs. The only difference that morning, was that my parents made a big deal about taking a shower and putting make-up on for a family photo in the park (fake family photo).
The park is beautiful and absolutely breath-taking with gorgeous rhododendrons in bloom in the Spring. No words can adequately describe its’ beauty. Windsor Great Park is a large deer park and Crown Estate of 5,000 acres, to the south of the town of Windsor. The park was, for many centuries, the private hunting ground of Windsor Castle and dates primarily from the mid-13th century.
My mom supposedly set up a dog training session for myself and the new puppy, Duke. She told me to wait on a set of stairs somewhat hidden from the rest of the park. She told me that the dog trainer wanted me to be alone so that Duke wouldn’t get distracted in any way. Duke and I stood waiting, all alone on the stairs, completely oblivious to what was about to happen.
After about 5 minutes, I hear, “Hey Babe.” I was a little creeped out and scared that some stranger was talking to me. I turned around to see Forrest standing there holding a lovely bouquet of white flowers (they kind of matched the color of his face)!!! He ignored all of my questions. How did you get here? Where is the trainer? What are you doing? Where are my parents? Do they know? Forrest immediately got down on one knee and pulled out the most gorgeous ring. We were both shaking as he said, “Will you marry me?” I took the ring out of the box and he placed it on my finger. He also said a lot of nice nice things but I can’t remember! I knew this was the special moment but I was in a dreamy fog and state of shock!.
We called my parents and they came back to meet us. Ann Marie, my sister, had no clue this was happening. When she saw Forrest next to me, she couldn’t stop screaming, “I knew it!!” She also couldn’t stop crying. We spent the next hour making phone calls back to the US, first to Forrest’s mom and dad, then to other family and friends, waking people up at 6:30am. Everytime I would tell the story to someone on the phone, Ann Marie would start crying happy tears all over again.
Forrest, being in England and proposing, has been such a wonderful surprise and I sometimes feel like I’m living a complete dream! Congrats to my parents and Forrest’s parents for pulling this off, because it was so special.
We were married March 1, 2008, honeymooned in Belize and are now starting our lives together in San Antonio Texas.

  • Hi Darcy!
Here is my engagement story -
Last year my boyfriend and I took a road trip to Seattle to see one of our favorite bands play. Before we left, we decided that since we would be in Seattle we would plan a romantic night. We decided to eat dinner in the beautiful restuarant at the top of the space needle. The restuarant floor rotates, so that you sit at your table and rotate around-being able to see Seattle all around the space needle. All of the people at the tables were placing little notes on the windowsill. The idea was that they would go by the tables for all to read or write on, etc.
After dinner my boyfriend went to the restroom and then had the waiter place a note saying "Karen Marie Anderson, will you marry me??" ahead of our table. The funny part of the story is that the table in front of us saw it and read it aloud (multiple times, not knowing that it was an actual proposal) I heard them and was confused at first, but when I realized what was happening the tears started coming. The best part was that when the other table realized what happened, all the people around us started cheering and clapping. It was a beautiful moment!
Or wedding is June 28th. Thanks for all the great tips you have in your blog!

  • Hello Darcy.
I so admire your career! Just to quickly share my engagement story... My boyfriend set up for us to attend the St.Patrick's Day Parade here in Cincinnati, Ohio. Since my birthday falls the day before, I thought all his planning was for a birthday party. I had no idea what his connections as being the top DJ in Cincinnati would bring. He arranged to stop the parade just as the bagpipers were coming down and one of the officials held up a banner that read "Jenny I love you will you marry me? -Jimmy" I was so surprised that when he got down on one knee in front of all of the city I took off the wrong glove for the ring! He stood up after I said yes and whispered in my ear to take my left glove off. The best part is having this all on video from his family taping the event. We're planning on October 3, 2008. :)

  • Hi Darcy,
My engagement story: After deciding we were both ready to get engaged, and me (ever prepared) anticipating the proposal, my fiance resigned to the fact he would not be able to surprise me unless he got creative.
I'd had a stressful day at work prepping for a presentation I was asked to deliver to my boss and colleagues. I stood at the head of the table in the conference room explaining the strategy I'd developed but noticed no one in the room was paying me - or my strategy - any attention. One colleague seemed to be sending text messages under the table. Another kept checking the time on his phone. I paused to politely ask everyone put down their iPhones and pay me the attention I deserved. Problem solved? Unfortunately no. The rudeness continued. A few minutes passed and I asked again, "everyone, please. I've spent a great deal of time constructing the presentation I am showing you. At very least I ask you listen as I present." Of course, they all said. They were very sorry. When the odd behavior STILL didn't stop, I threw in the towel and told them I'd be happy to reconvene at a time for convenient for them.
Frustrated and confused, I walked out of the conference room toward my desk. As my workspace came into view I noticed there were flowers on my desk. As I came around the corner and my space came into full view, I saw my fiance sitting in my desk chair surrounded by the most beautiful flowers. I turned around to see my boss and coworkers, moments ago rude and distracted, were actually secret co-conspirators with ear to ear grins. At that moment my fiance got down on one knee and proposed in the middle of my office.
We'll be married August 31 of this year in the CA Wine Country - hopefully with no surprises. :)

  • Hi Darcy,
My engagement story: My fiance Chad and I had been on vacation for about 10 days at that point, doing a little "Tour of New Zealand," attending a wedding in the Waiarapa region, relaxing and catching up with Chad's friends from throughout the country (he is from New Zealand). We arrived in a town called Hanmer Springs - home of natural hot pools in which we languished the whole afternoon. Chad will tell you that is when his real proposal was, as he made a ring out of flax and gave it to me in the hot pools. I sort of laughed because I thought he was just being a bit facetious.... I mean, it wasn't a REAL ring afterall. =)
Anyway, we ended up leaving the hot pools in the evening and heading back to our campsite in town. By about 9:30 p.m. we had pitched our tent, had dinner, brushed teeth, the whole nine yards when Chad suggested going for a hike. Personally, I thought he was nuts as it was getting dark. But he promised me that it was just a little hike - we would drive to the bottom of the hill from the campground and that it was just a short walk from the bottom of the hill to the top. So, I agreed and trundled up the hill with him to a park bench overlooking the town and the sun setting behind the mountains. It was really beautiful, so I was busy taking pictures, not realizing he was frantically trying to fish the ring out of the bottom of his pocket! Not too long after, out came the ring, he asked and I said YES!! (After which we trundled back down the hill using his cell phone as a light, as it was pitch black!!)
Our wedding is planned for September 5, 2009 in Traverse City, Michigan.

  • JANICE WOLFERSBERGER & RICHARD CHARLES
    AUGUST 1, 2008
    95 days to go!
    ABOUT JANICE
I was born and raised in NJ. I am the youngest of four. I graduated from BCC with a degree in Applied Science and I currently working as a RN. I enjoy spending time with my family, my fiancee and of course planning for my upcoming wedding!!
    ABOUT RICHARD
Richard was born in Haiti and came to the US when he was five years old. He was raised by his siblings who were also very young. He grew up in Newark, Livingston and East Orange, NJ. He graduated high school in E Rutherford. He attended Johnson and Wales University in Miami, Fl with a degree in Culinary Arts and went on to get his Bachelors in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Fairleigh Dickenson University in Teaneck, NJ. He is currently employed by The Ferrington House, as a chef in North Carolina.
    HOW WE MET
We met at a gas station (no he wasn't pumping my gas!) I was with my girlfriend just chillin. We went to get gas and Richard pulled up along side of us. He came over and started talkimg to me. I gave him my number, chatted for a minute and then was out. He called me right away. We met up the next day for coffee. He told me that he was about to leave for Vegas. (He had gotten a job offer at the Belagio)He was leaving that Saturday. I didn't think anything of it, but as we were talking I realized I was going to marry this man. I didn't know how it was going to work being thousands of miles away from him, but I knew we were meant to be together. We spoke every day for 9 months. It was hard falling in love with someone you couldn't spend time with or see very often. It took a lot of prayer and faith. We had moved to NC in April together. I had taken a traveling assignment there. I loved spending my time with him. I came back to NJ and he stayed in NC, but our love still continued to grow.
    WHEN WE GOT ENGAGED
    July 20, 2007
    HOW IT HAPPENED
Finally, in July, he asked me to go to Florida with him. We had then also decided to go to Cancun for the weekend from Florida. I met his sister and her family in Florida and we left for Cancun on Thursday. While we were in the airport, I had called my mother to give her the flight info. Richard wanted to speak to her, so I gave him the phone. They were on the phone for about a half hour. I didn't know what they were talking about. (They had never met eachother!!) We arrived in Cancun Thursday. On Friday night we had a reservation for dinner at this nice Italian restaurant within the resort. We had just finished our dinner and had ordered dessert. While waiting for desset, Richard asked me for a kiss. I gave him a quick kiss, and he said "What kind of Meghan kiss was that?!" (Meghan is his five year old niece) So I gave him a nice kissy kiss and then he said to me~"You know I Love You, right?" "No you don't" I said joking around! "No, really, I do", he said. I said "Ok, maybe you do!!" Then he said, "would you marry me?! "Yeah, I would marry you", I replied. "No, no will you marry me?" as he got down on his knees and reached into his left pocket. "Stop playin, I said, laughing. " Did you ask my mother!?" and he shook his head yes, and placed a beautiful diamond ring on my finger. I never felt so special in my life. He truly is a blessing. I love him very much, and can't wait to spend my life with him, and I know he feels the same!

  • Hi,
I've just discovered Martha Stewart Weddings. I'm from Antwerp,Belgium, so Martha isn't that famous here...
In Europe we are a bit different when it comes to weddings and proposals.
    This is my story:
I work in the diamond business in Antwerp, so I know quite a lot of jewelers. One day, we stopped at a display window from a very famous Antwerp jeweler. I saw THE RING, and gave a small hint to my boyfriend. He didn't pay much attention to it, and so I forgot the whole thing.
Later that week I passed by the same window, with my father this time. To my surprise the ring was gone! I thougth: No, he couldn't have... My father appeared to be uninterested. So I gave up the thougth of my boyfriend buying it.
A couple of weeks later, we were both ill. It was a warm day, and we sat in the garden to get some fresh air. Because of our illness, it wasn't certain that we could go on the little trip to the Ardens we've booked earlier that month. Suddenly my boyfriend went inside, came back, and before I realized he sat on his knee, proposing to me... with THE RING!
I started crying, I was so overwhelmed.
After the "shock" I called my parents. Apperently they all knew what was happening, my boyfriend intended to propose on our little trip. My father told me, that the day after I saw the ring for the first time, he went together with my boyfriend to the shop (because my father knows my ringsize).
I was soooo...I can't really describe the feeling. It was the most beautiful moment of my life. Later that week, we could go on our trip, and so we enjoyed 2 days of pure romance, me showing of my precious ring to everyone.
This all happend at 4th of august 2007, and now we're both looking forward to our wedding at 9th of august 2008.
I've been planning everything for several months, and now, the advice and tips of Martha are so useful to me! I hope she'll come to visit Belgium one day.

A "Crush" of Same Sex Marriages Anticipated for Napa and Sonoma's Wine Country
    May 23, 2008
    Napa, CA
In response to California's Supreme Court ruling which declared that the state's current statutes restricting same gender marriages were unconstitutional, wedding venues and event professionals throughout Napa and Sonoma's popular "wine country" are gearing up for what may be their biggest year ever. While research shows the LGBT community representing only 4 to 10 percent of the overall population, the pent-up demand for marriages in the gay and lesbian community is huge. Not only will there be a demand for marriages among younger couples, but many couples who have been in committed relationships for years will now be able to enjoy an open celebration and the legal and financial advantages of marriage. To date, only California and Massachusetts recognize same sex marriages, another reason for anticipating an influx of gay couples to the region.
For over 20 years, the Napa Valley and Sonoma County have been popular areas for both local and "destination" weddings. Beautiful scenery as well as world-class wineries and resorts, combined with the region's proximity to San Francisco make it a welcoming location for the LGBT community. "These regions are the perfect place for celebrating a gay marriage. Napa and Sonoma County offer sophisticated wedding services, beautiful venues and scenery, great honeymoon options and northern California has traditionally been one of the most "gay-friendly" regions in the world. Couples wanting to get married and honeymoon in this region will find they are treated with dignity and can comfortably display their affection openly," says Christina Andrews of NapaWeddingSource.com and SonomaWeddingSource.com.
A pioneer of the "wine country" wedding scene, Reverend Blane Ellsworth of The Wedding Ministries and Enchanting Elopements (www.weddingministries.com and http://www.enchantingelopements.com) has performed thousands of marriages, as well as commitment ceremonies, in Napa and Sonoma County. Reverend Ellsworth says "How truly fair and right it is that love can now be openly and legally celebrated by all people. The State of California has bestowed an empowering gift to same sex couples… acceptance for who they are and the people that they can become."
"What a change this is from 20 years ago when ministers, such as myself, were terrified to perform a same sex union knowing what threatening repercussions it could have on our professional status," continues Reverend Ellsworth. "As a minister it was heartbreaking to me that a heterosexual couple that had only been together for a short period of time could get married in the fervor of a new relationship while a devoted homosexual couple that had been together for years was chastised for openly declaring their feelings for one another." "I'm exceedingly proud to be part of a community of wedding professionals that is embracing gay marriage." "This is a pride I have been unable to experience with the church," says Ellsworth.
The California Supreme Court's new ruling allows same gender couples the same rights afforded heterosexual couples that wish to get married in the state. Same sex couples from anywhere in the United States can now come to California to be legally married.
In a May 15, 2008 press release, John Tuteur, Napa's County Clerk said "Pursuant to the court's ruling I am waiting to receive direction from the California Office of Vital Records on implementing this decision." "As soon as these directives are received, we look forward to issuing marriage licenses to and performing ceremonies for same gender couples."
It is anticipated that the California Office of Vital Records will be issuing its directives within the month.

  • Here is my Southern Engagement Story:
Travis and I decided to take an extended weekend trip to Savannah, Georgia this past April, to help relieve the stress of working long hours. Little did I know that he had been planning this trip and how he would propose for months beforehand.
We arrived in Savannah on a Friday afternoon and had a short while to walk around before we changed for dinner at Elizabeth on 37th. We had a wonderful dinner complete with cheese biscuits and mussels. When the dinner was over, Travis kept the bottle of wine we drank because he said that he "like the wine we drank". We then went on a carraige ride tour of the city (just the two of us) and came up to Whitfield Square where there was a white gazebo. The tour guide informed us that it was "good luck" for couples to go in the gazebo and share a kiss, so Travis and I proceeded to walk to the gazebo and as soon as we stepped in Travis grabbed my hands told me how much he loves me and got down on one knee and proposed! We had the rest of our long weekend to just enjoy being with each other. We are getting married on May 16, 2009 in Birmingham, AL.

  • Hi Darcy,
I am getting married this September and have enjoyed all your tips and advice, save one. Your Spring 2008 issue recommends Wedding Paper Divas, and while their designs are appealing their service is not. They are divas no question but when you are planning your wedding you want to be the only diva around! I've had a tough time getting what I paid for and would not recommend them to others.

  • I need to know how much you tip the caterer. If we get charged for the meal plus tax plus service charge fee. It wiil be teh porcetage on top of that and how much will be appropiate, and also should we give it before the reception stars or at the end.
    thank you

  • Planning a wedding is exciting, but I never realized how run down you can get. Especially since I have a limited budget,I have a 2 year old, and my future husband is currently serving in Afganistan. I'm also a big do it yourselfer, so I guess you can say, I'm busy.
Our wedding is going to be "Fall simplicity" including natural fall decor with burnt orange and gold .It is comming along nicely however I am a bit nervious on doing my own bridal party floweres and there are so many choices. I need advice on the type of floweres avaiable, close to burnt orange, and all the how toos for beautiful floweres for my day.

  • I am planning my wedding and stressed about flowers and then I saw, on a postcard for a subscription to Weddings, THE BOUQUET I'm looking for from the 2007 Summer issue's cover. What flowers make up that bouqet?!
