Diamond Point

Posted by

Every woman in love dreams of getting an engagement ring, but not too many put much thought into maintaining it. And you should! Your diamond should be checked once a year to make sure it’s not loose in its setting. As for keeping your diamond shiny, I learned this trick from Martha: Soak your ring in a mixture of 1/2 cold water and 1/2 household ammonia for 30 minutes. Drain on a paper towel, and voila! Your diamond is as good as new.

  • I know that many chemicals can damage platinum -- is ammonia safe for diamonds in a platinum setting? I am a chemist, so I've learned (the hard way) to wear gloves at ALL times when I'm working in the lab to try and protect my poor ring...

  • My jeweler told me a really good diamond does not need to be cleaned. The only parts that will need cleaning are the platinum/gold part of the ring if it shows. She told me if I must clean it, I should use a piece of silk.
